A heat-generating reactor to decarbonize industry and strengthen energy sovereignty

By combining modularity, enhanced safety and adaptation to industrial needs, ARCHEOS embodies an innovative response to climate challenges and the strengthening of energy sovereignty. It represents a new-generation nuclear reactor model focused on flexibility, decarbonization and energy efficiency.

ARCHEOS serving the decarbonization of industries

ARCHEOS provides a concrete solution to industrial decarbonization by supplying low-carbon industrial heat of up to 150 °C. This capacity makes it possible to efficiently replace installations still running on gas or coal, particularly common in sectors such as food processing, chemicals, paper and textiles.

By being installed directly close to industrial sites, ARCHEOS maximizes energy efficiency and limits losses associated with heat transport. This proximity makes the solution both competitive and high-performing to meet low- and medium-temperature heat needs, while significantly reducing the CO2 emissions associated with industrial heat production.

The ARCHEOS solution

ARCHEOS embodies an innovative response to today’s energy challenges. It is an SMR, an innovative small modular nuclear reactor model with enhanced safety, very high energy efficiency and meeting flexibility needs. It supplies low-carbon heat to industry and thus helps achieve carbon neutrality.

An industrial joint venture serving the industrial transition

CEA & NUVIA joint venture

ARCHEOS is based on an industrial joint venture, led by the CEA for development and support, and NUVIA for design, construction and operation. These two players will be joined by a boilermaker bringing all its expertise. The circle of partners makes it possible to work on a sustainable industrial project capable of preparing the operation of future units.

The nuclear power of tomorrow: SMRs at the heart of the energy transition

Faced with the climate emergency and the need for sovereignty, requiring us to decarbonize our energy sources, nuclear power must be recognized at its true value: it is a low-carbon, sovereign and dispatchable energy. SMRs provide an innovative, safe and, above all, complementary response to renewable energies, which remain intermittent. The combination of these two solutions will form a reliable, low-carbon and resilient energy mix.

SMRs at the heart of the energy transition

60 years of impact for a sustainable energy transition:

In a context of energy transition, every tonne of gas avoided counts. Thanks to its innovative technology, ARCHEOS offers a low-carbon alternative capable of massively replacing the uses of fossil gas. At the scale of a fleet of 10 units, the environmental benefits are considerable and form part of a long-term approach, serving cleaner and more sustainable energy.

A 100 MW thermal ARCHEOS unit avoids the emission of 200,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

For a first fleet of 10 ARCHEOS reactors, over a 60-year lifetime, this represents 42 million tonnes less gas, the equivalent of the gas consumption of the inhabitants of a large French metropolitan area.

Industrial heat needs across all territories
Industrial heat needs across all territories

ARCHEOS: an infrastructure for the Territories

Requiring no water, discharging no liquid effluent, and occupying a one-hectare plot, ARCHEOS will be able to be installed as close as possible to needs, in the Territories.

By offering competitive heat at a stable price over the long term, ARCHEOS will contribute to the energy security and economic competitiveness of industrial players.

A driver of economic attractiveness, ARCHEOS will foster the lasting anchoring of employment within the Territories.

European industrial SMR alliance

ARCHEOS has joined the European SMR Alliance

ARCHEOS joins the European industrial alliance dedicated to Small Modular Reactors (SMR). A major strategic step that fully illustrates our commitment to decarbonizing industry and developing low-carbon energy solutions.

By joining this benchmark ecosystem, ARCHEOS will take an active part in the collaborative work aimed at accelerating the deployment of SMRs across Europe. This membership strengthens its position as an innovative player serving industries facing the challenges of the energy transition.
